Marcel Ciolacu: I don't want to be a candidate after recount
Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu declared, on Friday, that he does not want to be a candidate after the recount of votes and will withdraw from the race for the presidential elections even if it is found that he is in second place in the first round of voting.
"I do not want to be a candidate after the recount. The final is - Mr. Calin Georgescu and Mrs. Lasconi. I announce very clearly today that if, after the recount, it is found that I have more votes than Mrs. Lasconi, from my point of view see, Mrs. Lasconi has an explanation to give to the Romanians and not me. I don't want to be a candidate after the recount. I tell you very clearly that I'm withdrawing, (...) I'm not leaving it on Calin Georgescu, the next candidate, Mrs. Lasconi, is going up. Since I am withdrawing, not a single person can enter the second round," Ciolacu said, at the Social Democratic Party (PSD) headquarters.
He mentioned that, although he behaved "elegantly" with Elena Lasconi, she and her colleagues circulated "all kinds of lies" in the public space.
"I was an elegant man, I went out, I congratulated Mrs. Lasconi on the phone, I told her that for me she and Mr. Georgescu are the two candidates in the second round. Meanwhile, I notice that Mrs. Lasconi drives all kinds of of lies in the public space and his colleagues. I don't understand why. (...) It will be very difficult when Mrs. Lasconi calls me on Monday, because she will need every vote to defeat Mr. Georgescu. If Ms. Lasconi wants to call me on Monday, I say, especially after this statement, that she should go out and tell the Romanians that in the 24 hours she lied. If not, I advise her not to call me," the PM said.
Elena Lasconi declared that the approach to the CCR regarding the recount of votes from the first round of voting in the presidential elections is a "desperate attempt by those who do not know how to lose to manipulate the results of the elections so that a certain candidate is favored".
