Cottingley Primary Academy in Leeds, West Yorkshire, said that the German Shepherd and a security guard were being enlisted 'as a precaution following recent incidents in the community'. It follows a spate of incidents including windows on the school's minibus being smashed, parents said. However, some parents have raised concerns around the use of the working dog, often recruited for police work and military service, for fear of children's safety. A message sent to parents last Thursday read: 'As of yesterday we now have an additional layer of security in place with a security guard and dog. 'This is in place due to the recent increase and severity of anti-social behaviour on the estate. 'I would like to reassure you that both the guard and the dog are fully trained and checked and are safe to be on the school site. Thank you.' Speaking at the school gates today, one mother said: 'They've had the minibus smashed up twice, the headteacher does get some threats. 'She does get some threats off some of the old students who used to come here who are in high school now. 'She is just trying to look out for the students and staff members who are in the school at the moment. 'I think it's a bit pathetic that it's needed at a junior school, but at least they are taking it seriously. 'Just before Christmas, both minibuses were smashed up to the point where they they couldn't deliver the curriculum the kids were offered. 'You never expect a junior school to get a guard dog.' The mother had last week raised concerns when a dog was first introduced to the school, claiming the initial pooch was 'lunging' towards children. But she said this week a different dog was in use, which seemed to behave more appropriately around the kids. She added: 'The dog was literally jumping at kids, we didn't get pre-warned, so when we went to pick our kids up we've just been bombarded with this dog. 'It had a muzzle on that was too small, it's going to be in distress and not going to be able to do its job properly I don't think. 'There's been no previous warning of them getting a security dog and a security guard, they should have let us know first. That was my only problem with it. 'I kept my kids off school on Thursday and Friday but they're back in today. 'It's a new dog that's started today and this one doesn't seem too bad, it's got a muzzle on that fits perfect and it's got a security badge on, it's just doing it's job.' A spokesperson for Cottingley Primary Academy said: 'We take the safety of our pupils and staff extremely seriously, and we have put in place security arrangements as a precaution following recent incidents in the community.'
