The Trust for Civil Society in Central and Eastern Europe (the “CEE Trust”) was established in 2000 by a group of US foundations - the Atlantic Philanthropies, the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the German Marshall Fund of the United States, the Open Society Institute, and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund -
as an initiative to support civil society in seven countries (Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia). The founders committed $60.5 million towards the target budget of $75 million, with the remaining part to be raised over the lifetime of the CEE Trust.
The mission of supporting the sustainability of civil society was further defined through three mutually complementary objectives:
l supporting legal, fiscal and political frameworks needed for a thriving civil society;
l strengthening the nonprofit sectors through institutional capacity building; and
l supporting the long-term financial sustainability of nonprofit organizations.
Through a mix of grantmaking and some operational programs, the CEE Trust rolled out comprehensive efforts to achieve these objectives throughout the region.
Having completed its grantmaking operations in 2012, the CEE Trust takes this opportunity to look back at this unique collaborative effort of a group of foundations set in the context of the social and political transformation of Central and Eastern Europe.

- ca o initiativa care sa ajute societate civila din sapte tari (Bulgaria, Republica Ceha, Hungaria, Polonia, Romania, Slovacia si Slovenia).
Fondatorii s-au angajat cu $60.5 millioane de dolari, la un buget total de $75 million, iar partea ramasa a fost adusa adusa de-a lungul duratei de viata a acestei organizatii, CEE Trust.
Nota: CEE Trust si-a incetat activitatea in anul 2013, sponsorizarile ONG-urilor se fac in prezent prin alte organizatii. (ex.: FDSC.ro, etc...)

Open Society Foundations (OSF), formerly the Open Society Institute, is an international grantmaking network founded by progressive-liberal business magnate George Soros.[2]
Open Society Foundations financially support civil society groups around the world, with a stated aim of advancing justice, education, public health and independent media.[3][4]
Since its founding in 1993, OSF has reported expenditures of over $11 billion.[5]
The name is inspired by Karl Popper's 1945 book The Open Society and Its Enemies.[6]
History
On May 28, 1984, Soros signed a contract between the Soros Foundation (New York) and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the founding document of the Soros Foundation Budapest.[7] This was followed by several foundations in the region to help countries move away from communism.[8]
Open Society Institute was created in 1993 to support Soros foundations in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.
In August 2010, it changed its name to Open Society Foundations (OSF) to better reflect its role as a funder for civil society groups around the world.
In 2012, Christopher Stone joined the OSF as the second president. He replaced Aryeh Neier, who served as president from 1993 to 2012.[10] OSF has expanded the activities of the Soros Foundations network to other areas of the world where the transition to democracy is of particular concern.
The Soros Foundations network has nodes[clarification needed] in more than 60 countries, including the United States.
OSF projects include the National Security and Human Rights Campaign that opposes detention of unprivileged combatants and the Lindesmith Center and others dealing with drug reform.
