Ciolacu says not leaving as PM before issuing an OUG to address inequities regarding military retirement benefits
Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said on Tuesday that in the coming days he will discuss with the ministers in charge and with acting chairman of the National Liberal Party Ilie Bolojan for an emergency ordinance to be issued to correct the inequities regarding military pensions.
"I will call a meeting at the Government Offices, then, of course, I will speak with Mr. Bolojan, I will also speak to the Finance, Defense, and the Interior ministers, the deputy prime ministers, because it is totally unfair that, for mere electoral reasons, the military personnel were drawn into a dispute regarding their retirement benefits. And I believe that it is my duty not to leave the office of prime minister until I issue an emergency ordinance to clarify this matter, which has now come before the Constitutional Court, as per democratic procedures. We are coming up with a solution, (...) issuing a government ordinance enshrining a right of these people who served the country, at a time when they are somehow pushed into the electoral dispute among political parties," Ciolacu said at the PSD headquarters.
Emphasizing that military pensions were a theme of the electoral campaign, Ciolacu said that the Pensions Law did not close the inequities for the military personnel, which is why a new piece of legislation is necessary. "Exactly as we solved the inequities for all the others, we are doing the same thing now," explained the prime minister.
According to him, the emergency ordinance will be taken into account in the state budget for next year.
The prime minister mentioned that the draft emergency ordinance cannot be adopted this week, because preliminary talks are necessary with the representatives of the military personnel, with the Liberal acting leader, and the relevant ministers.
