_ Hugh Grant reveals the Bridget Jones 4 script 'has him in tears' as he opens up about the new film and confirms major plot twist

Hugh Grant has confirmed some upsetting news for Bridget Jones fans as he opened up about the upcoming fourth movie.

The actor, 63, portrayed hunky lothario Daniel Cleaver in the first two hit films, 2001′s Bridget Jones's Diary and 2004′s Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, alongside co-star Renee Zellweger.

Hugh decided not to return for the 2016′s Bridget Jones's Baby causing his character to be written out by being killed off in a plane crash, however a newspaper headline teased at the end that he was actually found alive.

The Notting Hill star has revealed the new film, which is set to hit Peacock for Valentine's Day in 2025, is going to be the 'best one' yet and has already moved him to 'tears'.

He told ET: 'I'll tell you what, I think this script for the fourth Bridget is the best one of the four. And, in fact, one of the best scripts I have read for in a long time.'

Hugh went onto confirm that Colin Firth's character Mark Darcy, who was the father of Bridget Jones' baby, won't be making an appearance as his character has been killed off.

He continued: 'It's based on trying to bring up two children alone, and then [it's] all mixed up in the Bridget Jones [style] comedy, so its very sad, as well as very funny. It has me in tears.'

The fourth film, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, is reportedly based on the Helen Fielding book of the same name and keen readers will suspect that Mark dies early in the book.

The Wonka stars comments seem to confirm that Colin won't be appearing in any major capacity as Mark and he was also not included in the cast list press release.

Hugh added: 'It just suddenly sprang out of, you know, Helen writing another book. Hopefully, we're not too ancient. I don't do much now, I've just got a few scenes'.

It was revealed earlier this month that Renee will be returning as the witty singleton, alongside Grant as loverat Daniel Cleaver. The Mail On Sunday confirmed the movie will begin filming in May.

Emma Thompson - who played Doctor Rawlings in 2016's Bridget Jones's Baby is also back, with Chiwetel Ejiofor and White Lotus and One Day star Leo Woodall also set to star, per THR.

To Leslie director Michael Morris will helm the film - based on the 2013 novel of the same name, with the film's script penned by author Fielding and Miramax co-financing the film.

Universal will release the film on Peacock on Valentine's Day 2025 while internationally it will be released in theaters.

A movie source told The Mail On Sunday in February: 'Bridget is back and is about to take over London. Filming is being mapped out already and all of the pre- production is in place.

'There was some uncertainty about whether it would get off the ground, but the movie is coming.

'Renee is excited about bringing Bridget back. She adores the character so much. Bridget Jones fever is expected to sweep across London this spring.'

The most recent film, released in 2016, saw Bridget shocked when she found out she was pregnant.
