USR's Mosteanu on CCR decision: Certain characters are clinging to power at any cost
Save Romania Union (USR) Lower House floor leader Ionut Mosteanu termed Thursday's Constitutional Court ruling for a recount of the presidential first-round votes as "surprising" and "unprecedented".
"At this moment, it appears that certain characters are clinging to power at any cost, even at the cost of democracy. Just looking at the last few days, on Monday all political leaders seemed to have accepted the election results, even if they didn't sit well with them. They came as a surprise for many," Mosteanu said at the USR headquarters.
According to Mosteanu, Sunday's vote was the result of the will of the Romanians, and any day the runoff campaign is being postponed "puts democracy in danger".
"Sunday was a voting day, let's not say impeccable, but perhaps the cleanest in recent years, free of polling station incidents - the result of the vote represented the Romanians' will. Each ballot was put in the ballot boxes and counted correctly throughout the country. We have delegates in the polling stations, we did the parallel count - we and all the other parties - we centralized the minutes. It all added up exactly, those are the results. A surprise for the first place and a victory for Elena Lasconi, leading Marcel Ciolacu by 2,700 votes. Today the Constitutional Court was supposed to confirm the first round of the election and tomorrow, according to the law, we were supposed to start campaigning for the second round. At this moment, any day of postponing the campaign puts democracy in danger," the USR representative argued.
The Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR) ordered on Thursday the Central Electoral Bureau to re-check and recount all the valid and void ballots cast in the election for the office of president of Romania, the CCR said in a release.
