Social Democrat Senator Robert Cazanciuc emphasized on Thursday that a tentative revision of the Constitution to adjust it to the current times should satisfy the needs of the citizens and not "the politicians' cravings or group interests", told Agerpres.
"156 years have passed since the adoption of the first Constitution of Romania, and the Fundamental Law has since seen no less than seven versions and undergone 16 revisions, in accordance with the changes occurred in the Romanian society; the legal changes were also inspired by the Constitutions of other states. The current Constitution was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on November 21, 1991 and approved by the national referendum on December 8 of the same year, with a significant majority. This version too was revised in 2003. After 10 years, Parliament attempted a new revision, but more than a year after the Revision Committee cast the final adoption vote, the Constitutional Court ruled that certain articles were unconstitutional and struck down the draft. The committee subsequently resumed its activity," Cazanciuc wrote on Facebook.
He also mentions that over the past 10 years, all attempts to amend the Constitution have failed and the question persists whether a new revision is necessary to update it.
"Maybe yes, maybe not, but if it were to happen, the revision should satisfy the needs of the citizens and not the politicians' cravings or group interests. The U.S.A., where I happen to be today, on Romania's Constitution Day, has the the oldest Fundamental Law in the world, as it has effectively been in force for almost 230 years now. Amended or not, revised or not, the Constitution of Romania must be respected by every Romanian, whatever their capacity. Including the President, who has the constitutional obligation to make sure that the Fundamental Law is observed," Cazanciuc concludes.
