Lasconi: Romania's democratic and European future - the stakes of December's upcoming elections
Centre-right presidential contender Elena Lasconi, leader of the Save Romania Union (USR), stressed on Tuesday that the stakes of the parliamentary and presidential elections on December 1 and 8 are Romania's "democratic and European future."
"It's not just about who will occupy the Cotroceni presidential seat or who will form the future government. It's about what kind of country we want to be: a democratic one, which reveres freedom and European values, or a country that goes back a long way into the mists of the past, in isolation, with legionnaires at the head of the state, a country at the mercy of Russia. It's for us to decide if we want to be in Europe, if we want to be protected by NATO, or become Vladimir Putin's vassals," Lasconi wrote on Facebook, cautioning that on December 1 and 8, Romanians will be able to vote for "a modern country" which builds hospitals, schools, highways, for a Romania that "protects the rights of every citizen and is respected" in Europe.
According to Lasconi, it's important for Romanians to decide "with their eyes open" who will represent them in Parliament and who they will mandate to form the government.
"This is what we decide this Sunday. We vote whether we resist this Russian invasion. Calin Georgescu and those who support him on this path are a danger to Romania. Their speech, proclaiming hatred, the return to the past and isolation, is a danger to democracy. I want a country of respect, of democratic values, that stands up to corruption and privileges. A pro-European country that continues to be part of the great NATO family. I call on you to join me in this fight for democracy. Romania must go forward, not backwards. A Romania for all, not just for some," wrote the USR leader.
