Germania: Poliția caută membri ai Mișcării Cetățenii Reichului în rândul propriilor agenți

An alleged member of the “Reich Citizens” movement in Germany has been arrested on suspicion of an arson attack on a family of Syrian refugees.
The 56-year-old man, named only as Harry K under Germany privacy laws, is suspected of starting a fire outside the front door of the apartment where the family were staying.
Twelve people had to be treated for smoke inhalation, including some of the Syrian family’s German neighbours and a ten-month-old baby.
Neighbours alleged the arrested man was a member of the far-Right “Reich Citizens” movement.
The “Reich Citizens” refuse to accept the fall of the pre-war German Empire and do not recognise the authority of the modern German state.
While there is no official confirmation the suspect is a member of the movement, the arrest is the latest in a series of recent incidents that have brought it under the spotlight.
A police officer was shot dead by a Reich Citizen last week. The man lay in wait for officers who had come to seize his private collection of weapons and opened fire without warning.
Another Reich Citizen, who styled himself the “King of Germany” and operated his own illegal bank and health insurance scheme, is on trial on charges of embezzling more than £1 million from his “subjects”.
The latest incident involved a family of Syrian refugees living in an apartment in the east German town of Döbeln. The arrested man is an upstairs neighbour in the same block.
He is accused of setting a pram on fire in the hallway outside the Syrians’ apartment shortly before midnight on Tuesday.
He is alleged to have made a series of complaints to the police against the family for trivial matters like slamming doors.
Neighbours alleged he had “Reich Citizen” flags in his apartment and said he told them he was a member of the movement.
The Reich Citizens were largely seen as harmless eccentrics in Germany until recent months.
They issue their own identity cards and drivers licenses, and are often prosecuted for refusing to pay tax.
But a series of violent incidents culminating in last week’s shooting have led to calls for a crackdown and Thomas de Maiziere, the interior minister, has promised a review of the movement.
