According to a press statement released on Monday by the PSD, "Romanians risk paying billions in damages, due to the decisions of Ciolos, Orban and USR [Save Romania Union]". "PSD categorically states that the former prime minister Dacian Ciolos is the main culprit for the critical situation in which Romania finds itself in the dispute with the company that owns the mining rights at Rosia Montana. Romanians must know that! Regardless of the decision the international court will issue by February 10, 2024, it is obvious that when he approved the submission of the application for the inclusion of the Rosia Montana site in the UNESCO universal heritage, Dacian Ciolos knew that it would affect the interests of Romania in the already opened litigation with the owner of the exploitation right." The social democrats add that Ciolos "knew very well" that with that decision he violated Romania's commitment and that all taxpayers in Romania could be made to pay huge damages, with a huge negative impact on the national economy. "Given the circumstances, Dacian Ciolos is guilty of undermining the national economy and is definitively disqualified from holding any public office. Ciolos can no longer ask for the vote of the citizens whom he could condemn, through his decisions, to pay huge damages! Equally guilty is Prime Minister Orban, who ordered the resumption of the procedure for inscription in the UNESCO Heritage List, after the PSD government had requested the interruption of the procedure until the dispute was resolved. Also, a large part of the responsibility rests with USR, which launched itself into politics on this subject, and later, through his ministers in the Citu government, he vehemently opposed the withdrawal of the file from UNESCO, although the then finance minister pointed out that Romania risks paying huge damages of between USD 0.5 and 3.5 billion." According to PSD, "the same protagonists are also responsible for the overpriced purchases of COVID vaccines," as a result of which Romania is asked to pay damages of EUR 1 billion . "The Romanians must know because of whom they risk paying the possible damages established in the international courts! PSD emphasises that it does not question either the opportunity or the environmental impact that the Rosia Montana gold mining project would entail. The problem is that Romania, through the right-wing governments that granted the right to exploit, made a commitment, which Ciolos, Orban and USR knowingly broke, thwarting any possibility to resolve the dispute amicably."
