President informs Parliament about forces of Army, Internal Affairs participating in 2022 missions abroad
President Klaus Iohannis sent a letter to Parliament on the forces and resources of the Romanian Army and the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) approved for 2022 to be made available with a view to participating in missions outside the national territory, from the budgets of the Ministry of National Defense (MApN) and MAI.
According to the document, as many as 3,273 forces of the Romanian Army and 2,536 belonging to the MAI will be sent this year on missions and operations outside the national territory.
"In a constantly deteriorating security environment, the Romanian armed forces are called upon to respond to increasingly diverse challenges, and there is an ever growing trend towards diversification of the manner, the areas of action and the level of the involvement. At present, Romania benefits from strong security guarantees offered by the membership in the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) and the European Union (EU), as well as the good relations with the neighboring countries and with its strategic partners," reads the president's letter.
The President states that our country will continue to rely, in addition to NATO and the EU, on the Strategic Partnership with the United States of America, which "ensures the optimal framework for strengthening relations between the armies of the two countries, in order to substantiate Romania's strategic position at the Black Sea".
In 2022, the forces and capabilities of the Romanian Army participating in missions and operations outside the territory of the Romanian state will be under NATO, EU, UN, OSCE leadership, as well as under the leadership of anti-ISIL/Daesh and within the Takuba Task Force.
"The main effort will be to increase participation in operations in the Western Balkans (KFOR, under NATO auspices and EUFOR ATHEA, under EU auspices), including by making available the reserve forces, on hold in Romania, while maintaining a significant contribution to NATO's rapid response forces and within the fighting group for ensuring NATO's enhanced forward presence in Poland," mentions the document.
The Romanian Army participates in the Takuba Task Force, under the leadership of France, throughout 2022, for "training, advising, mentoring and accompanying in combat the Malian and Nigerian armed forces, facilitating and coordinating the coalition's activities in order to identify and counteract the activities and actions of the extremist-violent and terrorist organisations in Sahel, according to the specific operational requirements," states the head of state.
In 2022, the Ministry of Internal Affairs will make available forces and resources for the EU, OSCE, NATO and UN missions, as well as within the leadership structures of these international organizations, to operational commands in mission areas and EU agencies, Iohannis said.
