Second linear particle accelerator commissioned in Galati, in presence of HealthMin Rafila
The second linear particle accelerator at the Radiotherapy Department of the Galati County Emergency Clinical Hospital was commissioned on Friday in the presence of the Minister of Health, Alexandru Rafila, and of the president of the Galati County Council (CJ), Costel Fotea, told Agerpres.
The value of the investment, which includes the purchase of the second linear particle accelerator and the arrangement of the bunker, is over 2.1 million dollars, funds from the World Bank, within a program run by the Ministry of Health.
"It is an important day for Galati medicine. From today, patients with oncological diseases can be treated at Galati with the help of two linear particle accelerators. The new medical equipment, which has already been put into operation, is one of the most efficient in the world, being equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Galati is one of the few medical centers in the country that has two linear particle accelerators for the treatment of cancer and the only one in this area of the country. I had the honor of having the Minister of Health with me, to whom I thank that he came to Galati and that he accepted our invitation to visit some of the investments made by the CJ in the field of health, such as the two buildings built for the Specialty Outpatient Clinics of the Pneumophthiology Hospital and the County Hospital, the modernization of the Emergency Department or the Diagnostic Center of cancer with the help of PET-CT," stated Costel Fotea.
He added that the doctors from the Radiotherapy Department of the said hospital perform approximately 50 sessions daily with the linear particle accelerator, inaugurated at the end of 2019, and a second device was needed. Since the inauguration of the first linear particle accelerator, approximately 37,000 radiotherapy sessions have been performed in Galati.
"15 such accelerators have been installed in the country, in 11 locations, two of which are already installed here. Galati is an important city, beyond the large number of inhabitants, which also has qualified human resources in this field, and the Faculty of Medicine of Galati can train specialists so that these devices can be used. This regionalization is important, which allows access to high-level radiotherapy, something that happens here. I am glad that patients have access to such therapeutic solutions," declared Minister Alexandru Rafila.
